Title / Name
Facsimiles of the Declaration of Independence of New Zealand and the Treaty of Waitangi

Brief Description
Preface – this small volume of old New Zealand records comprises three documents, viz., the so-called 'Declaration of the Independence of New Zealand' – the original draft of the Treaty of Waitangi by the Late Lieut-Governor Hobson – and a series of copies of the Treaty itself as finally adopted, signed by the principal chiefs in various parts of both islands, with their signatures or marks attested by responsible witnesses. The marks are either arbitrary signs, or some particular part copied from the tattoo of the writer's own face. All these have been produced by the government Photo-lithographer as facsimiles of the original documents still preserved among the records of the Colonial secretary's Office, and are thus, for the first time, exhibited to the public, as being both curious and important.
