The following is a history of the Home Guard in the Cambridge district during World War II. This record of the Cambridge Home Guard's service has been researched and written by Cambridge military historian Dave Homewood, with the assistance of Eris Parker and the Cambridge Museum. Much of the information has been sourced from the Waikato Independent newspapers of the era from the regular reports inserted by reporter, V.G. 'Sam' Boulton, who was himself a Home Guard member.
The Home Guard was a volunteer army of civilians whose role it was to protect the town and district in the event of an invasion. Formed in mid 1940 when the threat to New Zealand was perceived to come from the Germans, later in the war the role of the Home Guard was much more necessary when the Japanese posed a direct threat to this country.
As the months progress a more detailed update will appear here on the website with a much fuller picture of events. So keep checking back here each month as new chapters are added. They get larger as the months progress and the Home Guard became more active.
