Cambridge local government commenced with the Cambridge North Highway Board, its principal task being the development and maintenance of district roads. With the town's expansion came the move in 1882 for a Town District and a Borough in 1886. Cambridge West (Leamington) was not incorporated in the Borough but remained under the authority of the Pukekura Road Board.
And so came Rates.
On 23 July 1900 the Borough offices had a fire and material including the Rates Registers were destroyed. Our indexes of people occupying Cambridge East properties begin in 1900 and will be added to periodically.
