Amigene Metcalfe

Amigene Metcalfe was a touch rugby and netball player.

Metcalfe was a member of the New Zealand Touch Team between 1994 and 2003.  During that time she played in three World Cups, two as Captain, and was runner-up three times.  She held the record number of Tests as Captain of the Women’s Touch Blacks (35 out of the 47 played).

She captained New Zealand to their first ever win over Australia in 2001, and was voted Player of the Series.

Amigene also played for Waikato Touch between 1994 and 2003.  They were the National champions in 1997, 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2003 and runners-up in 1994, 1995 and 1996.

She was recognised as New Zealand’s best women’s Touch player and one of the best in the world for much of her international career.  Such was her standing that she was inducted as one of the first four players to receive the Service to New Zealand Touch Award in 2004.

In netball, Metcalfe played for the Waikato Under 16s in 1988-89 and then the Under 21s in 1990-92. She was a Waikato rep player between 1993 and 2005 and Captain between 2002 and 2004.  She played 220 games during this time.  She played with the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic during 1999 to 2006 and then 2008 to 2009 – a total of 89 games.  Amigene captained Magic to titles in 2005 and 2006, and runner-up in 2008.  Amigene also played for the New Zealand Silver Ferns squad between 2002 and 2005.  In 2004 she played in the test series against Australia.
