Investing in Cambridge’s History

Over the next five years, Cambridge Museum is focused on a clear set of priorities:

  • protecting our collection,
  • expanding access to local stories,
  • strengthening
  • community partnerships,
  • and planning for long-term sustainability.

These priorities reflect the work required to care for a growing collection, meet public expectations, and remain a relevant, trusted place for local history.

Where Investment Is Needed

Collection Care and Storage

Our archive and photography audits are already underway. The next step is critical: improving storage and progressing toward a purpose-built collection facility. Without this, long-term preservation is at risk.

Access and Visibility

Digitisation, online exhibitions, and learning programmes require sustained investment. These are the tools that open the collection to researchers, schools, and the wider public.

Community-Led Storytelling

Working with iwi, community groups, and local organisations takes time and resource. Done properly, it results in richer, more representative histories. It cannot be done on goodwill alone.

Capability and Capacity

As a volunteer-led organisation, growth depends on targeted investment. This includes supporting specialist skills, increasing volunteer capacity, and ensuring consistent delivery.

Why Investment Must Be Prioritised

Collections continue to grow. Community expectations are increasing. Standards for care, access, and engagement are higher than ever. Without investment, the gap between what we hold and what we can responsibly manage will widen.

This is a risk to the collection, and to the stories it represents.

Targeted investment now will:

  • secure the long-term care of irreplaceable material
  • unlock access for research, education, and public engagement
  • strengthen partnerships and shared ownership of local history
  • position the museum for sustainable growth rather than reactive management

Delaying this work will increase costs and limit future options.

An Invitation to Invest

Operational funding from Waipā District Council enables us to keep the doors open. It does not fund transformation.

If Cambridge’s history is to be properly preserved and shared, additional investment is required.

We are seeking partners and donors who understand the value of this work and are prepared to support it.

This is not about short-term funding. It is about long-term stewardship.
