Calvert Chambers was built in 1925 on a vacant section adjoining Calvert’s Drapery premises on Victoria Street. It was commissioned by Robert George Clark Calvert, known as George, to provide additional upstairs office accommodation and expanded retail space.
The construction of Calvert Chambers marked a shift in the architectural character of Victoria Street. Its modern design contrasted with earlier timber commercial buildings and signalled confidence in Cambridge’s future.
George Calvert was a well-known figure in local governance and community life. His 25 years of service on the Cambridge Borough Council coincided with a period of steady urban development. In addition to his council role, he was actively involved in the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce, served as Secretary and later Chairman of the Cambridge Primary School Committee, and held a position as vestryman at St Andrew’s Church.
Architectural description
Designed by architect Thomas Stevenson Gray and built by Speight Pearce Nicoll & Davys Ltd (SPND), the building is constructed in lime bricks from Ngāruawāhia with a white plastered finish.
The parapet displays the name Calvert Chambers, with a flagpole at the apex. The suspended verandahs, steel framed sash windows, and large plate glass windows with lead lights and minimalist exterior reflect the Modernist movement.
