Carl Mossman
-
Carl Mossman was a 1970s softball captain and World Series winner. He was a vital member of the successful Cambridge Blue Streaks and Waikato softball teams in the 1970s. He and legendary former New Zealand pitcher Kevin Herlihy were key reasons why Cambridge was among the best club teams in New Zealand. Carl was a shortstop – the key position in a softball infield. He was noted for his athleticism and accuracy in the field and his speed around the bases as a top order batter.
Carl captained Cambridge to the New Zealand interclub title in 1979, when they became only the second club outside Auckland, Wellington and Hutt Valley to win the national crown.
He was first selected to represent New Zealand on an internal tour in 1973. The highlight of his career was selection in the New Zealand team, which were joint gold medal winners at the 1976 world championships in Lower Hutt, the first ‘world series’ held in New Zealand. He also represented New Zealand in 1978.
He was an accomplished coach. In 1985, he was the assistant coach of New Zealand’s world championship winning under-19 boys team, which won the country’s first medal at a junior world series, in Fargo, Dakota USA.
