Jim Watson
-
Jim Watson’s polo career, like that of Ken Peake, began at the age of 12. He went on to become one of the outstanding players in New Zealand polo. Ken Peake was Jim’s polo idol and early coach. Jim put his coaching to great use in representing New Zealand for 14 years and being our most capped international player.
Jim’s achievements are as follows:
- 1965, 70, 71 & 73 member of the Cambridge team that won the Savile Cup, for supremacy in New Zealand club polo.
- 1983 & 88 member of the victorious Cambridge team in the Savile Cup. Of note is that few players have won the Savile with totally different teams.
- Late 1980s Convenor New Zealand Selectors.
- Late 1980s Convenor Northern Polo Association Selectors.
- Mid 1980s Head Umpire New Zealand Polo Association.
- 1978 – 82 Head Coach New Zealand Polo.
- 1968 – 82 Represented New Zealand captaining the team throughout this time.
- 1968, 74 & 77: as well as the traditional 4-aside tests, Jim represented New Zealand in 3-aside tests in 3 series against Australia.
With such a long and illustrious career, Jim Watson belongs to a small group of New Zealand’s polo elite.
