Kym Kearns
-
For 20 years Kym Kearns was at the top of New Zealand Roller Hockey until her retirement in 2000.
She was first selected for the New Zealand team as a 17 year old. She played in 21 tests, represented New Zealand at four World Champs and nationally she won 17 national titles at both roller and inline hockey, fifteen of them in a row.
An indication of her world class was that at the World Champs she was ranked World No.1 offensive player twice, 3rd once and added 15 Australian and Oceania titles to her list of achievements.
While her sport may not have a large player base in New Zealand, it is a major sport in Europe and North America and the list of Kym’s international achievements for New Zealand is impressive:
- 1988 Winner of the World Roller Hockey Euro Cup in Germany.
- 1989 Repeated this victory at the same event in England.
- 1992 New Zealand won bronze at the first women’s World Roller Hockey Champs in Germany.
- 1994 9th at the World Champs in Portugal.
- 1995-96 Captained the New Zealand team in a 3-match series against Australia.
- 1996 Named captain of the New Zealand team for the World Champs in Brazil, but the tournament was cancelled due to political reasons.
Kym then changed to inline hockey, immediately made the national team and represented New Zealand from 1996 until her retirement in 2000.
- 1996 2 match series against Australia and received the ‘most valuable player’ award.
- 1999 The highlight of Kym’s long career was being in the NZ team that won gold at the World Champs in Canada.
