Tulloch
-
Tulloch might have been small in stature but he was a giant performer on the racetrack in the 1950s and early 1960s. Tulloch was purchased for 750 guineas at the 1956 New Zealand yearling sales by legendary Australian trainer Tommy Smith.
Tulloch made an immediate impact as a two-year-old winning seven races and being placed six times from 13 outings. As a three-year-old he was virtually unbeatable winning 14 out of 16. In 53 starts, Tulloch’s only unplaced run was a luckless seventh in the 1961 Melbourne Cup carrying 64 kgs. Tulloch’s sensational career was interrupted by a serious stomach illness that sidelined him for nearly two years. He then made an amazing comeback which culminated in an emotionally charged victory with 62.5 kgs in the 1961 Brisbane Cup. Tulloch was rated up among the all time greats of Australasian racing and recorded Australasian time records in winning the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate.
