About us

Who we are

The Cambridge Historical Society is a group of locals who have a keen interest in all aspects of history, although we focus on local history.  We also run the local museum.  We hold regular gatherings, which are an excellent opportunity to learn something, as well as socialise with like-minded individuals. Feel free to come along to one of our gatherings to get to know what we are all about.

History

Cambridge residents started collecting items of local historical interest in the late 1800s. In the early years, various collections were held in private homes and put on display.

The Cambridge Historical Society was formed in 1956 and has been active ever since. The Society’s interests have included historical research, pre-European settlement, the development of Cambridge, field trips and the protection of built heritage.

A major part of the activity of the Society has been the establishment and operation of the Cambridge Museum. The Museum has had many homes including a private residence, power station, the Library and the Town Hall. The Museum was moved to the present site in the old Courthouse on Victoria Street in 1983.

Today the Society has over 200 members and continues to stimulate and guide public interest in historical matters.
