When W F Buckland’s Legal Chambers were completed in 1904, they signalled confidence in the town’s future. The Waikato Times described them as “perhaps one of the finest suites of offices in the province, outside of Auckland,” noting that the imposing brick building gave Duke Street a far more substantial appearance.
Buckland was not only a lawyer but a key civic leader. He served as Mayor of Cambridge from 1893 to 1903 and again from 1905 to 1910. Considered a progressive mayor, he supported major projects including the gasworks, courthouse, post office, Victoria Bridge, water tower, band rotunda, and Town Hall.
In 1912 the Legal Chambers were purchased by lawyer and former mayor Sam Lewis. His son, Peter Lewis, continued the practice until 1962. Later rear additions housed the Waikato Independent newspaper after it moved from Lake Street.
Architectural description
The ground floor was purpose built for the legal practice of Buckland and his son. It included a waiting room, private offices, a clerk’s room and a strong room. The interiors were finished to a high standard, with rimu panelled walls, decorative ceilings and detailed cornices.
The strong room reflected the importance of security. It was constructed with thick brick walls, a concrete floor and reinforced ceiling, and protected by a fire and burglar proof Milner steel door weighing around half a ton.
Upstairs was a hall and four offices. These could be used together or rented separately. A wide staircase with solid brass handrails led to the upper floor. Each office had its own fireplace and good natural light.
Built of first-class brick, the plastered façade followed a classical design, with a rusticated base, Corinthian columns and a balustrade along the roofline. Contractors Potts and Hardy carried out the construction to the design of Auckland architect B W de Montalk.
