The Cambridge Quartet, 1963
-
In 1963, the Cambridge Quartet won the prestigious Mobil Group Contest. A year later, they performed at the Cambridge & District Centenary Grand Concert, becoming part of the town’s official celebrations.
What makes the group remarkable is not just the music, but the men behind it. They were tradesmen as much as performers: Ron Griffiths, a panel beater; Len Gerrand, a master builder; Chas Strange, a master cabinet maker; and Harry Shields, a master painter.
Together, they reveal a time when music-making was woven into everyday community life.
