School Sewing
Donated by Miss Clare Wallis
Accession No. 10799
Even after the advent of the sewing machine, girls learned at an early age to do fine hand sewing for making clothes. Here is a sampler of different mending and sewing techniques created by a girl at school.
Included are gathering into a band, tucks, flat seam, buttons and button holes, hooks and eye/loops, reinforcing, patching, hemming and a simple drawn thread decoration.
