Armed Constabulary Members in Cambridge

The list of members of No. 4 Division of the Armed Constabulary, headquartered in Cambridge, has been compiled by Eris Parker from the Nominal Rolls held at the National Archives in Wellington. It is presented here in full as a research resource. If you recognise a family member among the names, there may be additional material relating to them in the Museum’s Archive, including photographs, documents, or local references.

Please get in touch with us if you would like to enquire or share further information.

The Armed Constabulary in Cambridge (1867–1886)

From 1867, law and order in Cambridge was carried out by the Armed Constabulary, a force that combined military and civilian roles. Headquartered in Cambridge, one of its Waikato divisions was responsible not only for policing but also for building roads, maintaining communications, and providing security during periods of unrest, including the Te Kooti conflicts. As tensions eased, the force became increasingly involved in everyday civic work and community life.

By the mid-1880s the Armed Constabulary was wound down, and in 1886 it was replaced by the newly formed New Zealand Police Force, marking the shift to a fully civilian police service.
