When Cambridge Town Hall opened in 1909, it brought together a main hall with a stage, borough offices and council chambers, and a Carnegie Library, creating a centre for both civic life and learning. Over the years, it has adapted to the needs of the town. During the 1918 influenza epidemic, it served as a hospital. For many years, it operated as a picture theatre, with a major refurbishment in 1927. It has welcomed distinguished visitors, including Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 1954, as well as governors-general, war heroes, and sporting champions.
More than anything, the Town Hall has been a place for people to come together. It has hosted debutante balls, hunt balls, school fancy dress events, flower shows, art displays, and choir festivals. It has been the setting for weddings, 21st birthdays, engagements, reunions, and countless private gatherings. From gymnastics to a wide range of indoor sports, generations have made use of its spaces. The building has been refurbished many times, reflecting its ongoing importance to the community.
Architecture
Architecturally, the Town Hall presents a strong and elegant presence. It is built mainly of white Huntly brick, with red brick detailing that highlights the arches, windowsills, and a continuous band around the building. The base is constructed from hollow concrete blocks with a rock-faced finish, giving it a solid, grounded appearance. The grand recessed entrance porch is finished in a Doric style, with two imposing pillars supporting the front wall and galleries. Decorative elements include stucco panels with red brick accents, arches formed in Oamaru stone, and touches of the same stone on the side ramps. Features such as the gabled pediment, half-round multi-paned windows, and decorative plasterwork add to its character.
